I thought I’d start off with a short description of myself. Mom, ferrier, IT consultant, PTA officinado, kids activities, social life and food planner and sourcer, travel agent + traveller, packer, reader, writer, all and sundry doer- what did this make me? A Closer? a Generalist? an Allrounder ...... a Ninja? But I couldn't really say this to someone when they asked me about myself could I? I found myself mulling about this while in the immigration Q filling out a form which wanted to know my "occupation" and yet gave me 30 characters to fill it in!!! I imagined the look on the immigration officers face if he saw the word “Ninja” written next to "occupation"!! For one I didn't look like one ( ok so I had put on some holiday weight, ok so if was before the holidays!). Second I wasn't wearing the customary leather outfit and face mask. In my defence though I was wearing an all black outfit (legend has it that its slimming) and my face with its under eye rings from lack of sleep having travelled economy class for 14 hours with two of my very own mini ninjas did look like I was wearing a mask ( a sad one). So what should I write? I realized then that the best way in the current vocabulary to describe myself in a way people would understand and not get intimidated was a set of words called “stay at home mother” , even though I’m hardly ever at home thanks to my above job description and could better be described as a Military General than a mother!! I imagined being led off to the inquiry room and asked questions like "who do you work for"? (me: two of the most dangerous people I know and an ungrateful one) "where do your allegiances lie?" (me: chemicals ( read alcohol)) "why have you come to this country?" ( me: to kill ( time during summer holidays!). After all that was the only time I was going to get to myself and I was planning on drawing it out as long as I could!! However one look at the pleading face of the kids' " go to office father" had me reluctantly scribbling "stay at home mother"- I realised I had to stay undercover to save planet earth .....one kid at a time! After all some mystery is always great!:-)
